This white squirrel will be much bigger when it sneaks up behind you at Silvermont Mansion.
Silvermont Mansion in Brevard, a grand Colonial Revival house restored into a community center, is gearing up for its centennial next year. Half as old, but perhaps equally cherished, is the seasonal TV special It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, which recently turned 50.
The historic house’s annual Halloween event, “Lighted Pumpkin Patch and Revenge of the White Squirrels,” is a relatively new event, but reminiscent of the Great Pumpkin in its soulful silliness. The family attraction features giant white squirrels — Brevard’s signature rodent — stalking the premises, but nothing is too scary for small children (it’s no Pinhead’s Graveyard).
Live singer/songwriters, including Ben Phan of Asheville, make it a festive affair, along with donuts and cider.
