Transylvania County Farmers Market is a prize plum in the area’s plethora of outdoor markets, and that’s definitely saying something in our homegrown-rich mountains. In recent years, artisans selling boutique food and craft items have joined all the small-scale farmers offering their produce on Saturday mornings.

At the best markets, there’s live music, usually traditional old-time acts. But Brevard gets a special treat this week when nationally known Americana troubadour Dave Desmelik, a resident of the area, plays for free on market day.

Desmelik has released 10 albums since going solo in the late ’90s, and his dark, moving, original compositions have been praised by critics near and far. The singer/songwriter has traveled extensively across the country and in the UK, supporting such major acts as Richard Thompson.

“The album is doing well and getting a good response,” Desmelik recently told Bold Life. “It’s a collection of previously recorded songs of mine, done with the current trio [Josh Gibbs and Andy Gibbon] and recorded in one take on a [vintage] recording device.

“I also continue to perform numerous shows around the region as solo, duo, or trio. I love writing songs and playing music.”
