Since they opened earlier this year, HenDough has enjoyed unqualified success, offering two no-fail staples of comfort food — fried chicken and donuts — in various creative incarnations. Husband-and-wife owners Paul and Sarah Klaassen bring a long combined background in food and food service to the table. The casual, quirky environment is also a major lure. Their Klaassens’ new gourmet burger is a collaborative affair, too: a double cheeseburger with bacon jam served on a glazed donut.

“We make 20 every Thursday, and when they’re gone, that’s it,” says Paul. “It’s been pretty fun and well received so far.”

Meanwhile, the pair is making plans for a walk-up donut window at a space on Main Street to be announced. “We will have some of our most popular flavors, plus flavors unique to that location,” says Paul, who also reports that the new space will carry local products from Dynamite Coffee, Mills River Creamery, and Blue Blaze soda. HVL Donuts will be open Tuesday through Saturday (hours coming soon). “It’ll definitely be a unique little shop,” says Paul.
