January should be icy — but even when the weather doesn’t deliver, members of Transylvania Vocational Services definitely do. “ICE” by TVS opens Wednesday, January 6, at the Transylvania Community Arts Council in Brevard. The mixed-media works, with all displayed pieces centered around an icy or wintry theme, were created by adults who attend the nonprofit’s day programs. (The org provides skills development, career opportunities, and related services for adults with disabilities or other barriers to employment.)

“Participants have discussed ice and winter and words, feelings, and senses related to that, including what they like to do to stay warm in winter,” notes Tammy Hopkins, the arts council’s executive director. “In this exhibit are photos of actual ice art, Borax snowflake ornaments, snowmen, collages, poems/word art, mixed-media group pieces, wine glasses, magnets, coffee cozies, oil-pastel drawings, and more.” ( All work is available for purchase unless otherwise noted.)

A reception will be held from noon-1pm on opening day; the public is invited to meet the artists behind this much-anticipated show. “ICE” is up through January 15. Gallery hours are 9:30am-4:30pm.
