Appalachian Wilderness – Keeping It Wild
March 1, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
The March Discover Natural Transylvania program at the Transylvania County Library will explore local wilderness areas with Bill Hodge, executive director of SAWS. Hodge’s presentation, Appalachian Wilderness, Keeping It Wild, will be on Thursday, March 1, at 6:30pm in the Rogow Room. It will highlight preservation efforts of areas such as the Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness Areas. SAWS, Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards, is dedicated to protecting land designated and managed as wilderness areas in the National Forests of the Southern Appalachians across five states. Locally they work closely with the National Forest Service, the Cradle of Forestry, and the Job Corp to teach wilderness skills, build and maintain trails, rehabilitate campsites, and remove invasive species. They train volunteers in the use of traditional tools and educate users in wilderness first aid and leave no trace practices. The program is approximately one hour and light refreshments are provided. Discover Natural Transylvania programs are supported by the Friends of the Library.
