Discover Natural Transylvania: Southern Highlands Reserve
August 2, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
Discover Natural Transylvania at the Transylvania County Library on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 6:30pm will feature Kelly Holdbrooks, executive director of Southern Highlands Reserve. The Southern Highlands Reserve is dedicated to sustaining the natural ecosystems of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the preservation, cultivation and display of plants native to the region and by advocating for their value through education, restoration and research. Holdbrooks will illustrate the concept and development of the Southern Highlands Reserve (SHR), discuss the importance of our natural area, and the role SHR plays in conservation, education, and restoration in the Southern Appalachians. Key partnerships and projects will be highlighted in the presentation such as The Red Spruce Project. Holdbrooks has over a decade of experience in Western North Carolina’s vast horticulture and demonstrates her passion for fostering a human connection with nature through her guided tours of the reserve. Her research in experiential methods and the humanism of nature earned her a Master’s degree in landscape architecture from the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library who support the Discover Natural Transylvania program series on the first Thursday of most months.
