Headwaters State Forest
November 1, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
Michael Cheek, Headwater State Forest ranger, will be the speaker at the Transylvania County Library Discover Natural Transylvania program on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 6:30 pm. Headwaters State Forest is located in southern Transylvania County bordering conservation lands in South Carolina. The forest, which combines natural resource conservation objectives with sustainable dispersed recreation opportunities, opened to hikers, hunters and fishermen who practice Leave No Trace ethics in September. Improvements to the natural habitat, including timber harvesting, prescribed burns and wildlife rehabilitation, are planned for the 6,730 acre property. Cheek’s presentation offers an opportunity to learn more about Transylvania County’s newest public property. Cheek has worked with the Forest Service for 22 years, including the past 10 from the regional office in Asheville. He received his forestry degree from Clemson University. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library who support the Discover Natural Transylvania program series on the first Thursday of most months. Upcoming programs will feature bats in December, peregrine falcons and golden eagles in January, mountain weather in February, and skunks in March.
