Local Legacy: Reporting on the Forgotten Suffragettes of WNC
November 8, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am
FreeBlue Ridge Public Radio reporter Lilly Knoepp will discuss her work reporting on the local history of women fighting for the right to vote in Western North Carolina. Knoepp is the first full-time regional reporter outside Asheville. Most people know the stories of the Seneca Falls, N.Y., Convention and nationally known women’s history figures such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In this program, Knoepp will share stories of the first woman legislator in the south and the first woman senator in North Carolina, from Buncombe and Jackson counties, respectively. As the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage approaches, the public is invited to learn about the role of women fighting for the vote in WNC.
