Mountain Bogs: Jewels of the Blue Ridge
September 5, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
Deep in our forests, cloaked in tangles of rhododendron and soaked by underground springs, lie some of the most amazing wetland ecosystems: mountain bogs. Ecologist Owen Carson will discuss these one-of-a-kind systems that support unique collections of flora and fauna, often harboring rare, threatened or endangered species. The discussion will be at the Transylvania County Library on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30pm. Learn what conditions are needed to create a bog, what plant and animal species are found within them, where to discover mountain bogs in our area, and how to protect them during this Discover Natural Transylvania presentation. Carson is a 2008 graduate of Brevard College with a BS in Environmental Science and a minor in geology. Carson is a plant ecologist with Equinox in Asheville and contributor to the Outdoor section of the Transylvania Times. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library who support the Discover Natural Transylvania program series on the first Thursday of most months.
