The year 2018 ended with record rainfall totals across much of North Carolina and the entire southeastern United States. At the Asheville Airport about 80 inches of precipitation were recorded this past year, a new record. In Transylvania County the total was significantly higher though, especially in the western part of the county near Gorges State Park. Learn why this and other weather variations occur in relatively short distances at the Feb. 7 Discover Natural Transylvania program at the Transylvania County Library. Meteorologist Jared Rennie will take a look back in time and show how analyzing weather trends helps explain these variations. The presentation will be in the Rogow Room at 6:30pm. Rennie is a certified consulting meteorologist at the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) in Asheville. He works inside NOAAs National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), who are tasked with archiving all the world’s weather and climate data right here in Western North Carolina. The following week, on Thursday, February 14 at 6:30 pm the Transylvania County Library and Transylvania Natural Resources Council team up for a presentation on the effects of climate change. Climate Stories NC will include several short films and a follow-up conversation. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library who support the Discover Natural Transylvania program series on the first Thursday of most months.
