Needle Felted Landscape Workshop
April 27, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm$140
Needle felting is a relatively new fiber art. Although felt has been made with a felting needle for decades, it has only been used to create art since the 80’s. The process is magical and simple; all you need is a felting needle and wool to create 3D sculpture, jewelry, adornments, and 2D art. You can make everything from wool paintings to dimensional figures and vessels. In this four-week course, you’ll create two needle felted landscapes depicting the seasons of spring and fall.
In the first class, fiber artist, Anne Magrath, will review the basics of needle felting: the best wools to use, ideal work surfaces, and the differences between needles. Then, Anne will explain how methods that are used in painting can also be used in needle felting. Finally, you’ll begin to layout your landscapes, blocking out the sky and mountains/meadows.
In the second class, you’ll explore blending colors and fibers together to add depth and shading to your pieces. By the end of the class, you’ll have completed at least one, if not both, of the landscape backgrounds and be ready for the next stage.
In the third class, you’ll work on your trees and explore ways to add dimension and a bark-like effect to your trunks. You’ll learn techniques for creating branches and discuss how the difference in the seasons lead to different choices in how you design and color your foliage.
In the fourth and final class, you’ll add the finishing details to your landscapes. You’ll also learn how you could complete the four seasons by adding a winter and summer landscape and how you can effectively differentiate the subtleties between spring and summer. If time allows, you’ll have the opportunity to start a third season.
