The Story of the Pisgah Game Preserve
December 5, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pmFree
The Transylvania County Library’s Discover Natural Transylvania series on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6:30pm will feature the story of the Pisgah Game Preserve with David Whitmire. The program will look at the history of and role that the Pisgah District of Pisgah National Forest played in the recovery efforts of whitetail deer just after becoming the first National Forest east of the Mississippi in 1916. It was estimated only 500,000 whitetail deer were left in America after years of unregulated market hunting. By today’s standards the whitetail would have been at the very least a species of concern, if not threatened or endangered. Whitmire is the founder and co-owner of Headwaters Outfitters on the French Broad River near Rosman. He is well known for his efforts to promote and protect the French Broad River and received the French Broad Friend of the River Award in 1992. Whitmire currently serves as a board member with the Transylvania French Broad River Stewards, Transylvania Natural Resources Council, The Pisgah Conservancy, and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Council. In addition, he is a lifetime member of the North Carolina Bowhunters Association and was inducted into the NC Bowhunters Hall of Fame in 2018. He also regularly contributes to the Outdoor column in The Transylvania Times. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library who support the Discover Natural Transylvania program series on the first Thursday of most months.
