We like Mike’s on Main for its ice-cream parlor chairs, its milkshakes, its gleaming mid-century style, and its endless choices. It isn’t many places that offer a Monte Cristo sandwich on their breakfast menu, much less Eggs Benedict and Florentine. But this month it’s time to highlight something off the diner’s always-sizzling lunch and early-dinner grill, the Beefalo Burger, served with lettuce and tomato on a multi-grain bun.

The restaurant sources the meat for this specialty sandwich from Blue Ridge Beefalo in Horse Shoe. A passage on eatwellguide.org notes that “beefalo is a cross between domestic cattle and the North American Bison. This cross-breeding produces a superior beef animal that is naturally lean and naturally tender.” The local company says its animals are fed a natural diet. No hormones, synthetic tenderizers, antibiotics, preservatives, or enhancers are used in the meat, yielding a way-above-average burger.

Mike’s On Main, 303 North Main St., Hendersonville. 828-698-1616. Open Monday through Thursday, 7am-4pm; Friday, 7am-7pm; and Saturday and Sunday, 8am-5pm. See mikesonmain.com for more information.
