Mom on the Rocks

Take mom to experience waterfalls and cliffs on Sunday.

Nothing says “I love you, Mom” quite like skipping the hours-long wait for brunch at some tedious chain restaurant and opting instead for a morning reveling in next-level nature — something she’ll truly be able to brag to her friends about. Chimney Rock Park is staging a Mother’s Day Weekend Special this year. On Saturday (May 13) and Sunday (May 14) during park hours, if you buy one regular-price ticket, you get a free ticket for mom or grandma. It’s an ideal time to visit if CRP’s been on your Blue Ridge bucket list for a while. Postcard views, myriad trails of different ability levels, spring wildflowers, a cinematic waterfall, many family-centric attractions, and even rock climbing are on the list of things to do at the state park.

You can also show mom the best-known Transylvania County waterfalls this weekend, tailoring the trip to her other interests. If she likes a sip or two with her scenery, there’s “Waterfalls ’N Wine,” a one-mile hike sponsored by the Pisgah Field School that ends with a stop at Broad Street Wines in downtown Brevard (Friday, May 12: 11am-3pm, $65, pre-registration required, BYO sack lunch, cfaia.org, 828-884-3443). Also this weekend, DuPont State Forest holds its popular biannual Tour de Falls, an easy bus trip to the big three: Triple Falls, High Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. This trip is great for hobby nature photographers.
