Rolling in the Deep

The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club’s “Fletcher Flyer” on June 7 is not the steepest, longest, or most-to-prove-est race on the local mountain-bike scene. But it may well be the most beautiful, as it courses through the valleys south of Asheville, in Henderson and Transylvania counties. Take in a scenic view every second (or rather don’t: keep your mind on the road) in what race officials are calling the “least hilly ride in Western North Carolina.” The comparative light grade means 1) experienced riders can let it rip at top speed, and 2) newer bike scenesters can get their wheels wet, so to speak.

Four race lengths are offered, and the event begins at ends in Brevard (“Cycling Capital of the South”), at Oskar Blues Brewery, where the finish-line revelry includes barbecue, live music, and a complimentary beer. “Fletcher Flyer” is a fundraiser for Muddy Sneakers and Trips for Kids WNC.
