WCCA (Western Carolina Community Action) hosts its second annual “Game On!” fundraiser on Friday, October 16, billing it as the city’s “largest tailgate party.”

The theme is football, but it’s not sports-related. There’s no tackling or passing involved. Instead, the end game is scoring a financial touchdown for a decades-strong community-service group.

WCCA provides a comprehensive network of services for low-income residents in Henderson and Transylvania counties. Its programs include Head Start and Early Head Start (for children), Housing Choice Vouchers, Family Self-Sufficiency, Transportation, and Senior Services.

Passages on the group’s web site state: “in a culture of respect, WCCA helps underserved people build financial stability, improve self-esteem, become self-reliant, develop personal responsibility and contribute to the community … for more than 40 years, [the group] has helped thousands of families achieve long-term economic dependence.”

6pm-10pm at The Cedars (227 Seventh Avenue West, Hendersonville). Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple. The dinner and cash bar start at 6pm, followed by a “pre-game” show at 7pm with the East Flat Rockers. “Kickoff” starts at 8pm featuring the band Crocodile Smile. www.wcca.net.
