The Baker’s Box owners Mara and George Nicholas recently moved their bakery from a busy location on Kanuga Road to a roomier location along Asheville Highway. “We grew out of our other space, so we now have seating for everyone and a better kitchen, which is good because we do a lot of catering,” notes Mara. The pair met in culinary school, and Mara has baked at renowned locations including the Grove Park Inn. George was a banquet chef at the Washington Marriott at Metro Center next to the White House, where he served large crowds and famous politicians.

Mara started her dreams of entrepreneurship with a home kitchen, “but she was making more than sixty wedding cakes” per season, says George. Something had to give. Today, he cooks the savory stuff and Mara bakes the sweets (including cupcakes, muffins, Danishes, and cookies, plus gluten-free options). The in-house menu numbers a variety of sandwich options, while catering services include prime rib buffet, a live Low Country seafood boil, and smoked barbecue.
