The North Carolina Mountain State Fair hosts ten days of midway rides, livestock exhibitions, juried craft and crop competitions, and classic fair food — including the treat of an all-ages ice-cream-eating contest. The event is broken down into four age groups: 5-7, 8-12, 13-17, and adults 18 and up. Each group must finish a set amount of ice cream in the time allotted, starting with one cup for the youngest group and going up to a whole pint for adults. First-place winners get trophies, and ribbons are distributed through fourth place. Kids’ groups are limited to 20 competitive eaters, adults to 25. Sign up by 6pm at the Davis Event Center on the day of the competition, Tuesday, Sept. 11. Eating starts at 6:30pm.
